AFA CLUB DE LECTURE

SEPTEMBER SELECTION: La Bête humaine by Emile Zola - La Bête humaine, often cited as a masterwork, tells a story that details the psychological dissolution of a working man named Jacques Lantier. On board a train bound for the French port city of Le Havre, stationmaster Roubard murders a man who seduced his beautiful young wife Severine. Jacques Lantier also seduces Severine, who tries to entice Lantier to murder the abusive and controlling Roubard. AFA CLUB DE LECTURE

OCTOBER SELECTION: Les Bimanes by Severine Cecile Abega - A man worthy of the species must wear a jacket, a tie, trousers with a sharp fold, a dazzling shoe of waxing. His French must be impeccable, his office air conditioned, his wallet well stocked. The rest is only imitation. As soon as he stops serving paper and ink to use tools, he is no longer a man. It's a bimane. Through these seven stories, one feels the author's warm sympathy for the people of the bush, for the workers of the city. His caustic humor is willingly exercised against officials, the haves, the profiteers of all kinds.

JANE B PAR AGNES

Directed by Agnès Varda

France, 1988, 1h 37min, DCP, In French with English Subtitles

In the 1970s, model, actress and singer Jane Birkin was a high-flying sex symbol, but her friend and confidante Agnès Varda saw more than the iconic face and figure captured in the lens of the era’s fashion magazines. In this unusual, endlessly surprising biography, Varda explores the full possibilities of the two-dimensional portrait, and sneakily creates one of the great feminist films of the era.

Cine-Club Screening - Wine Calling

By Bruno Sauvard, 2018 - 95 min - Documentary - French with English subtitles

Producer Nicolas Manuel and director Bruno Sauvard will be joining us for a skype Q&A after the screening

Recently the world of wine has been in full effervescence, shaken by a counter culture as strong as the rock scene was in its time. All around the world, joyous rebels have invaded the vineyards to create the wine they love : a natural wine free of codes and norms. While there are more than 3,000 wine growers in France, less than 3 percent of them are working in bio, biodynamic or natural methods of wine production. For ethical reasons, this relatively small community of wine growers has chosen environmentally friendly farming practices aimed at finding the natural expression of “terroir” – the full breadth of land, geography and climate – and the living character of the wine.

It’s in the south of France, in the heart of Catalonia, that WINE CALLING has followed over a year, from the harvest to the bottling, some of the most exciting of these new wine growers, springboard of a rising global movement for taste and sustainability.  BUY TICKETS HERE!

Sauvage/Wild

Co-Presented by: AF Cine-Club

Seething with a feral energy that masks genuine tenderness, Camille Vidal-Naquet’s feature debut took the 2018 Critics Week at Cannes by storm. Anchored by a piercing, peripatetic lead performance by Félix Maritaud, "Sauvage" makes vivid a gay street hustler’s knife’s-edge existence. Both brutal and brutalized, sweet and savage, Maritaud’s prostitute roams from john to john in search of a fix (in the form of sex, drugs, and possibly even love), desperate for both intimacy and freedom, destabilized but ultimately resilient. The intimacies of male bodies both connected and colliding is sensitively captured by cinematographer Jacques Girault, guided by Vidal-Naquet’s assured direction.

Dir. Camille Vidal-Naquet, 2018, 99 min, France (in French w/English subtitles), DCP

June CINE-CLUB SCREENING: Place Publique by Agnès Jaoui

In June AFA Ciné-Club will present the 2018 French comedy/drama PLACE PUBLIQUE, a comical portrait and commentary on French society. Early in the story we meet Castro, a once famous television personality. It’s a lovely afternoon in the countryside near Paris. Castro attends a house warming party at the home of his longtime friend and producer Nathalie. During the party Castro encounters reality stars, actors, models, and an eccentric farmer who lives next door. Champagne is flowing and the party is in full swing. Castro’s ex-wife Hélène works the crowd to convince guests to sign a petition in support of an Afghan refugee. She barely notices the arrival of their daughter Nina who just published a book in which the main characters borrow heavily from her parents’ lives and flaws.

Actress and director Agnès Jaoui teams up with Jean-Pierre Bacri for their latest dissection of contemporary French society. Buy Tickets Here

DISCUSS LEILA SLIMANI'S CHANSON DOUCE on Saturday May 25th

AFA's May Club de Lecture session will be held May 25th in the Cellar at Genuine Joe’s Coffee Shop at 2pm. Get yourself a coffee or a bite to eat, or just join us to discuss Chanson Douce by Leïla Slimani. Club de Lecture is a members-only event.  Become an AFA member today and join book discussion on May 25th at Genuine Joe’s, 2001 W Anderson Lane.

Louise, a young nanny, is magic with children. Myriam, the children's mother, returns from her first day back at work to find that Louise has tidied the cramped apartment, seemingly doubling it in size. When the nanny also shows her abilities as a cook, the husband Paul proudly invites friends and colleagues to enjoy the dinners prepared by Louise. Louise seems to be a miracle, but Leïla Slimani opens her book with the shocking words: "Le bébé est mort."  At first, it seems like a crime novel, working backwards to enable us to solve, or at least to understand, the murders. Yet Slimani is more subtle than that. Over the three or four years when Louise is working for the Massés—with occasional flashbacks to her previous employments, her life with her late husband, and troubles with her own daughter—the author paints a complex but recognizable picture of contemporary social life, class and privilege. Leïla Slimani is the winner of the 2016 Prix Goncourt for Chanson Douce. Join us for AFA’s RESCHEDULED May Club de Lecture at 2:00pm at Genuine Joe’s on May 25th. Hope to see you there.
