On September 22nd, AFA's Club de Lecture will meet to discuss Les naufragés de l'île Tromelin by Irène Frain. Club de Lecture is a benefit of membership in AF Austin and is a members-only event. Become a member today and join us Sept 22nd.
In July 1761 the French ship l'Utile, illegally transported 160 Africans from Madagascar to the Ile de France (Mauritius) and approached Sand Island. In the night, the ship ran into a reef and capsized. This unbelievable true story of abandonment, exploitation and racism is also a story of strength, courage, resilience, adaptability, and the will to live. The courageous heroes trapped on Sand Island used their skills to organize and keep a functioning community together under most horrendous circumstances. A gripping novel about an inhumane incident and the power of the human spirit to overcome the most overwhelming odds. AFA Club de Lecture participants must be AFA members listed on the current membership list. Participants bring their own books. Become an AFA member and join us on Sept 22nd at 2pm.
